Scavenging and Creating Online Video Content for the HE Classroom

 Thursday, June 23, 2011

Venue: Techno Cafe, School of Engineering and Computing Sciences, Durham University, Durham, DH1 3LE

This workshop is the culmination of the C-SAP funded project "YouTube in the classroom: Exploring the opportunities and barriers to the use of YouTube in teaching introductory sociology to mature and international students". This project explored the use of YouTube videos in teaching an introductory sociology class, and through a series of focus groups explored the use of online videos by students more generally. The workshop will explore the potential transformation in the use of multimedia in class brought about by YouTube, Vimeo, Xtranormal, flip cameras, camera phones. The ease of production of multimedia content has meant a massive proliferation of online content available to students and teachers. It is now relatively straightforward to create, share and consume online videos. It is easier to incorporate these video sources in a class than it was even ten years ago with the physical constraints of DVD, VHS etc. The workshop will explore the implications of these transformations for classroom learning and teaching, as well as the professional development of academics and feature a mix of practical activities involving the sourcing and collation of relevant online materials in the morning, and the creation of online video content (in groups) in the afternoon. The groupwork will take place in the specially designed Techno Cafe. There will also be input in the form of live or recorded video feeds from external participants who will talk about related projects at the OU Professor Martin Weller and YouTube.edu (tbc).

No experience in creating or using multimedia content is necessary for this workshop which will be a great opportunity to play around with new tools and techniques in a supportive environment with like minded colleagues.
