Teaching about Islam in the Social Sciences Workshop

Teaching about Islam in the Social Sciences Workshop
Title:
Teaching about Islam in the Social Sciences Workshop
When:
24.06.2011 - 24.06.2011
Where:
Hornton Grange, University of Birmingham

Description

Organised by C-SAP, this workshop discusses ways in which issues relating to Islam might appear in Sociology, Anthropology, Criminology, Politics & International Studies courses.   We are especially interested in examining what learning, teaching and assessment issues are raised by the teaching of Islam and how tutors respond to these in the classroom or lecture room. The event will also provide an opportunity to examine a series of case studies that have been produced for C-SAP describing teaching which is related to the study of Islam. The case studies (available from our online store) form part of a resource bank being developed by the Higher Education Academy Islamic Studies Network.  This event will give lecturers, practitioners and postgraduate students an opportunity to share practice in their areas of interest and to discuss issues and potential developments in teaching Islam in the social sciences.

Plenary and feedback from discussions

1) On teaching and learning:

(a) What is our purpose when we bring ‘Islam’ and ‘Muslims’ into the social science curriculum: Simply informing? Changing attitudes (challenging prejudices)? Seeking student engagement with ‘real world’ issues?

(b) If controversy breaks out in the discussion, what are the best tactics to employ?

(c) If there are Muslim students in the group, what role do we ask them to play – or do we conduct the class without reference to the beliefs of any of the students?

2) On the future of the social science teachers of Islamic Studies:

(a) Do we want to set up an ongoing network of socsci teachers of Islamic issues?

(b) If so, how should it be organised (Web-based dialogue? Face-to-face events)

(c) Max and Malcolm have some proposals for the coming year - What specifically would you like the socsci group to do over the coming year?
